For most of us, having our photograph taken can rank anywhere on a scale of 1 to 10 depending on our confidence level. For those of you without a “perfect smile” you may have a lot of pictures of you with a closed mouth! You may well look at those pictures and be disappointed that the happiness you felt was not shining through. We often feel that only a wide smile showing our teeth is a true reflection of happiness and this can be an issue if your teeth are stained or crooked.

This may not be that much of a problem until we come to a crucial moment in our lives; getting married. Weddings are characterised by a lot of photographs, and nowadays video of the event. The bride and groom are constantly on show and their every move, laugh and cry is recorded. Worse, for the bride, the tradition of white bridal gowns can highlight even further the lack of a white smile! Many brides choose a softer ivory coloured gown for this important occasion as brilliant white can be somewhat unforgiving a colour to wear if you are pale skinned for example.

The last thing the happy couple want is for their special day’s photographs to be spoilt by a yellow or crooked smile on their faces! Many couples turn to teeth whitening for this special day; both to improve their smile’s appearance and to boost their confidence about smiling in the first place.

Traditionally we think of women being more concerned about their appearance. However, a wedding is just as important for the groom as the bride, so more and more men are also turning to their dentist for help in achieving a whiter smile for that special day.

The simplest procedure to achieve a photogenic smile is bleaching the teeth. This can be done either at the dentist or by using a home treatment. Another option that is becoming very popular is laser treatment of the teeth, more expensive but it shows good results.  It is a good idea to do this treatment several weeks before the wedding day to allow for the teeth sensitivity to settle down. It would be a shame if none of that wedding buffet could be consumed because your teeth are still sensitive from whitening!

If there are more significant problems with your teeth, such as chipped teeth, broken teeth or even missing and crooked teeth then other procedures need to be considered. It would be sensible and advisable to consult a cosmetic dentist well in advance of the wedding day to determine the best procedure for improving your smile.

Options available are veneers which are thin plastic or enamel coverings for discoloured or crooked teeth.

Alternatively you may need some more significant contouring or reshaping of the teeth to achieve the desired outcome. If you have missing teeth then implants are an option but these should be carried out by a registered and certified practitioner and the procedure needs to be booked well in advance of your wedding day.

Enjoy your special day!

Start with a consultation with your dentist and a good professional clean, scale and polish. From there you can decide which treatment would best suit you. Then you can spend your wedding day smiling to your heart’s content and enjoy the photographs afterwards!
